Socialist Night School - Week 3: Setbacks in the Labor Movement

Start: Tuesday, March 21, 2023 6:30 PM

End: Tuesday, March 21, 2023 8:00 PM

Hello again comrades, join us for the third class of the re-launched Socialist Night School on Tuesday, March 21st! We will be continuing our classes on organized labor, with the topic this week being how labor lost its place of prominence in the United States in the second half of the twentieth century. The readings this time can be found on the below links:

Reading 1: U.S. Union Revitalization and the Missing "Militant Minority" - We'll be starting off with an article covering how the gradual hollowing out of the most proactive and driven union organizers (oftentimes Socialists and Communists) led to complacency and stagnation that left unions vulnerable when they came under sustained assault.

Reading 2: Hard Times for Labor, an excerpt from the book Beaten Down, Worked Up by Steven Greenhouse. These three chapters provide a broad outline of the decline of unions during and after the 80s, with numerous firsthand accounts and explanations of the tactics used to break unions.

These classes are open to everyone, so as always feel free to spread the word to anyone interested. Because this is a live event, please be sure and bring a mask as wearing one is mandatory while indoors. We've been having some excellent conversations in the past couple classes, so be sure and attend!
