On Wednesday, Jan 8th the AC Transit board is considering an overblown censure of Director Sarah Syed. Please stand up to support Director Syed for being an ally of transit riders!

In 2024, Transbay Coalition, East Bay Transit Riders Union, and a coalition of allies successfully blocked a proposal from AC Transit that would have permanently removed weekend evening bus service from Broadway through downtown Oakland and pushed for improvements in the Realign service plan. AC Transit Director Sarah Syed’s leadership was pivotal in those improvements: she took the time to talk to riders and frontline workers to understand the challenges and needs and advance policies at the Board to address them.

She went above and beyond in service to the community and because of that some of her colleagues want to reprimand her for it with an official “censure.” At the January 8th AC Transit board meeting, the board will officially vote on whether or not to censure Director Syed.

We need to have her back. AC Transit board members should be encouraged to work directly with riders to improve transit service – they shouldn’t be punished for it.
