Speak Out to Repeal Costa-Hawkins!
Start: Friday, March 17, 2017•11:00 AM
Assemblymembers Bloom, Bonta and Chiu have introduced AB 1506, a bill to repeal the Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act. Costa-Hawkins has been a disaster for California renters. A special-interest law backed by the real estate industry that passed in 1995 statewide, Costa-Hawkins ties the hands of cities when it comes to protecting tenants from landlords who charge runaway rents. It's time for the state to stop dictating which properties are exempt from rent control, allow cities to choose vacancy control, and allow existing rent ordinances to be updated.

Landlords are mobilizing to pack this hearing and will argue that this bill will worsen the housing crisis and “force mom and pop landlords out of business.” Lies.
UNDER 22 YEARS OF COSTA HAWKINS, THE HOUSING CRISIS HAS ONLY WORSENED!
In Los Angeles, homelessness is increasing by double digits every year, tenants face the highest rent burden in the nation, there are less than 20 affordable homes for every 100 poor families and we are short approximately 400,000 units!
