Stop Oilfield Wastewater on Crops

Start: Saturday, July 16, 201612:00 PM

End: Saturday, July 16, 2016 1:30 PM

Outrageous. There's no other word to explain the recent relevations that big oil has been selling toxic oilfield wastewater to irrigate food crops in California's Central Valley.

Nearly 30,000 Californians sent letters to Governor Brown earlier this month to demand this practice stop. So far, the Governor has not spoken up and the industry wants to expand this questionable practice. It's time to turn up the pressure.

On Saturday, July 16th, Food & Water Watch and our partners will join Californians in a day of action against oilfield wastewater in our food. We will host events outside grocery stores up and down the state to call attention to this issue, demand rigorous testing and analysis of these crops from the state, and we want you to join us.

WHAT: Rally and flyering outside Ralph's Grocery Store
WHERE: Ralph's Grocery Store at Olympic and Barrington, 11727 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064
WHEN: Saturday, July 16th, 12 - 2pm
MEET: At the intersection of Olmypic and Barrington

Major fossil fuel companies like Chevron and California Resources Corporation sell tens of millions of gallons of oilfield wastewater from its operations for crop irrigation. Big Oil has been been doing this for at least twenty years on roughly 45,000 acres of Kern County farmland with little to no oversight from our regulators.

Consumer staples like almonds, tangerines and table grapes — items you probably have on your shopping list right now — have been impacted by this practice. The state doesn't require testing of the water beyond basic water sampling, and definitely doesn't test the crops that then end up on our tables. If the state doesn't do something about it, who will?
