Join the New York State Poor People's Campaign on International Workers' Day - May 1st (also known as May Day) - to deliver our petition and report directly to Governor Kathy Hochul!

During the budget negotiations, we've seen policies that would benefit poor and working class people - things like raising the minimum wage, Good Cause eviction protections, protecting bail reform, and many others - used as bargaining chips by the Governor and legislators. They are playing with our lives, and we won't be silent any more!

Details for the day are being finalized, so please fill out this form and we will keep you updated as the plans develop! Our plans so far:

We'll meet at First Presbyterian Church for a brief rally, then march to the Capitol! We'll head to the Class War Room outside the Governor's office and deliver the petition, and then make drop-in visits to legislator offices with our Poor People's State of the State Report and Petition. Finally, we'll gather back at the Million Dollar Staircase for a concluding rally.

We will do our best to support and coordinate transportation from around the state. Please check that box if you need assistance with this.

There is limited parking available at the church - we ask this be used only for those with accessibility needs. We will provide additional parking options as we confirm them.

Every year, the Governor of New York gives a “State of the State” speech, which includes numerous policy proposals. In reality, it is really a “State of the Rich.” While there are occasionally minor policies or concessions that are offered to poor and working class people, the policies proposed and assessment offered reflect the interests of the wealthiest in our State. In 2023, the Governor didn’t say the words “poor” or “poverty” once in her speech.

In order to “Shift the Narrative by Shifting the Narrator,” in 2023 the NYS Poor People’s Campaign launched a Poor People’s State of the State, with the goals of elevating the voices and demands of the 8.6 million poor in our state. This project includes several parts:

  1. A petition to the Governor, demanding she tell the truth about poverty in our state, and that she meet with directly impacted leaders of the NYS Poor People’s Campaign. The people most directly impacted by the interlocking issues of poverty must be at the forefront of addressing those issues. The petition will be delivered on May 1st.

  2. A short report on poverty in New York. If the Governor won’t tell the truth about poverty, we will. The report serves as a political education and narrative shifting tool. The report and a short study guide for use by organizations and community groups, can be found at nysppc.org

  3. On Martin Luther King Jr weekend, the NYS Poor People’s Campaign held a series of mass meetings around the state, in Rochester, Albany, and Long Island (Wyandanch). These events brought people together across historic lines of division, featured testimonies from directly impacted leaders, and presented an organizing vision to build a movement to end poverty in New York.

  4. An ongoing media narrative project, gathering video interviews and testimonies from directly impacted leaders around New York State, to be utilized in social media, short video reflections, and a longer video project. These tools contribute to our political education, narrative shifting, and organizing efforts.
