Currently, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is in contract negotiations with UPS. This is for a nationwide contract, involving some 350,000 members. They are fighting for the end of a two tier wage system, better wages for part time workers, an end to forced six day weeks, an end to surveillance in the form of driver-facing cameras, and air conditioned vehicles, among other things. After their last contract with UPS was forced on them by a business-friendly union leadership, that leadership was replaced by leaders aligned with the rank and file caucus, the Teamsters for a Democratic Union. They vow not to back down. The current contract with UPS is up on July 31. If the two sides cannot agree on a contract by then, a strike will begin Aug. 1.

With our Strike Ready campaign, DSA is showing it recognizes the importance of this struggle, and that it will be prepared should it come to a strike. They are asking all chapters to get their members’ pledge to support the Teamsters in that case, whether on the picket lines, donating to a strike fundraiser, bringing food and water to the picket lines, etc. As a part of that effort, we are organizing a phone bank to call our members. We need volunteers to help make those calls. The more people we have doing this, the easier our task will be. If you have questions, you can contact us at mkedsalaborsolidarity@protonmail.com. We look forward to seeing you at Zao MKE Church, June 6, at 6:30.
