Sun Day in San Leandro: Celebrate the Gifts of the Sun

Third Act SF Bay Area, in collaboration with the City of San Leandro, invites the community to celebrate the gifts of the sun on the solar equinox at the beautiful Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro (BGCSL).

This free family-friendly event, where the music and the frozen treat giveaway will both be powered by the sun, will take place outdoors in the colorful and inviting yard of the BGCSL and in one indoor space. Free parking, restrooms, picnic tables, and seating are all available.

Kids’ activities include pinwheel making and decorating, solar toy car racing, a gardening activity, and story time in both English and ASL. Artists, scientists, and storytellers from Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour, Junior Center of Art and Science, Punk Philosophers’ Garage Cafe, Samso Labs, and Signing Roots Consultancy will lead the way. Of course, adults are welcome to participate as well.

The Presentation Hub (in the cool indoors) will feature both videos and live presentations. Environmental Consultant Stefanie Pruegel will present My Electrification Journey: from Drafty to Comfortable and Fossil Free. There will also be a “live” trip around the sun, a personal ASL story, and simple ways to advocate for a fossil-free future. Bill McKibben, author, activist, and founder of Third Act, and Tom Steyer, author of Cheaper, Faster, Better, are making short videos for us. Fun songs, inspirational shorts, and electric appliance tips will also be included in the video line-up.

Groove to the sounds of live, solar-powered music on the outdooor stage, featuring The Radioactives, Pete Kronowitt and The EveryDay Items, Mami Mia, Mike Rufo, and Karl McHugh.

Always with a focus on a clean energy future for all, visitors can connect with a variety of earth-friendly organizations, including Bright Saver, California Native Plant Society, Citizens Climate Lobby Alameda, Dayenu Climate Group, Eden Health District, Food & Water Watch, GRID Alternatives, Happily Electrified, Lifers Leaving a Legacy, San Leandro 2050, Sierra Club, The Switch Is On, and Third Act SF Bay Area.

Plus food and prizes! Tacos and more will be available for purchase at Lola’s Taco Truck, and there will be frozen treats compliments of Third Act SF Bay Area. Bring your own fillable water bottle.

Finally, a free drawing will take place hourly. Prizes will include gift certificates to local restaurants, event tickets, gift baskets, music CDs, a birthday party for ten at the Junior Center of Art and Science, and more!

Sun Day is a Third Act national mobilization and action on September 21, 2025 — the fall equinox — celebrating solar and wind power, and growing the movement to build a cleaner, healthier future. Come together to celebrate the gifts of the sun and grow the clean energy revolution. Happy Sun Day!
