At Scenic Valley Farm we grow in 15 high tunnels in-ground bedded strawberries, vertical growing strawberries in stacked pots filled with soil, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, greens, blackberries, raspberries, garlic, herbs, vertical lettuce, ginger, turmeric, etc. We grow strawberries in a soiled based vertical system 10 months a year in Wisconsin. Our vertical stacking system has 50 or 100 plants per stacked pots. We are looking at artificial light to increase our yield and extend the season. We use solar thermal to heat 3 of the tunnels and have developed an Environmental Management System (EMS) controller to control the high tunnel processes including solar thermal. We also have developed a 30 day composting system using minimal labor for growers.
