What is Swing Left?

Swing Left is a national grassroots organization working to take back the House in 2018. It is building a national campaign for Democrats in 78 Swing Districts across the U.S. in three ways: by recruiting and training an army of volunteers, raising funds from grassroots donors, and building cultural momentum for the 2018 midterms on the scale of a presidential election.

Since Swing Left launched in January 2017, they have raised over $7M for Democratic candidates in Swing Districts from over 61,000 grassroots donors and enlisted over 400,000 volunteers to knock on doors, make calls, and register voters. Swing Left recently organized a coalition campaign called The Last Weekend to drive volunteer action on the critical four days before the November election—it is backed by 50 other leading progressive groups including MoveOn, OFA, and Indivisible, and has already garnered over 385,000 volunteer hours committed.

We need to flip 23 Republican-held districts to take back the House, and we know we can do this if we get enough Democratic and Democratic-leaning Swing District voters to the polls on November 6th. Swing Left is leading the charge in ensuring this happens.

About the Candidates:

NY-22 covers more than 5,000 square miles of central New York and has two large metro areas: Binghamton in the southern part and Utica-Rome in the northern part. In the last election, Republican Claudia Tenney won this district by only 15,178 votes (5.5%). That’s close! With your help, challenger Anthony Brindisi is going to win this seat for the Democrats in 2018. Brindisi was born, raised, and still lives in Utica, NY. He attended Mohawk Community College and earned a BA from Siena College and a JD from Albany Law School. He served on the Utica School Board and has represented the deep-blue 119th NY State Assembly District, comprising the urban core of Rome/Utica, since 2011. Brindisi is a named partner at Brindisi, Murad, Brindisi and Pearlman, a law firm founded by his father. He is married with two children.

NY-19 begins in the mid-Hudson Valley and continues northward, extending on either side of Albany. In the last election, Republican John Faso won this district by only 26,000 votes (8.6%). That’s close! With your help, challenger Antonio Delgado is going to win this seat for the Democrats in 2018. Delgado grew up in Schenectady, in the Hudson Valley of NY. He attended Colgate University, in Hamilton, NY, where he graduated with high honors and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. From there, he went to law school at Harvard. Delgado works as an attorney for the prominent DC-based law firm, Akin Gump, and lives in Rhinebeck with his wife and two sons. Delgado will be the first Hispanic and biracial major party nominee running to represent the region encompassed by NY-19.

NY-11 spans all of Staten Island and South Brooklyn (Bay Ridge and Sheepshead Bay, touching a small piece of Brighton Beach). The district went for Trump in 2016 by 54% compared to Clinton’s 44%. Though it is the most conservative district in New York City, in 2014, registered voters were 47% Democratic, 26% Republican, and 21% not enrolled in a party. Democrat Max Rose won the Democratic primary, besting five other candidates. An Army veteran who served in Afghanistan from 2012-2013, Rose earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge; he continues to serve in the National Guard. Rose was formerly Chief of Staff at Brightpoint Health, a non-profit serving Staten Island. Before that, Rose served as the Director of Public Engagement and Special Assistant to District Attorney Ken Thompson in Brooklyn. Rose holds a BA from Wesleyan and an MA from the London School of Economics. Rose lives in Staten Island with his wife.

NY-24 is made up of Onondaga, Cayuga, and Wayne counties and half of Oswego county. In the last election, Republican John Katko won 58% of the vote in 2016. With your help, challenger Dana Balter is going to win this seat for Democrats in 2018. Balter is a public policy professor at Syracuse University. Her academic research focuses on accountability in government, education policy, and public finance; she has taught courses in citizenship, policy, administration, and democracy. Following the November 2016 election, Balter began working as a community organizer to advance a progressive agenda in Central New York. This is her first run for public office.
