Turf Out Fake Grass! campaign launch
Start: Saturday, June 04, 2022• 3:00 PM
End: Saturday, June 04, 2022• 4:00 PM
Plastic grass exacerbates the urban heat island effect, and increases neighbourhood temperatures during heatwaves. Victoria needs to stop rolling it out in our public spaces!
Fake plastic grass can be up to 80% hotter than natural grass, and even hotter than concrete, on a hot day. It's increasing the surrounding air temperature and damaging our health.
Heatwaves kill more Australians than all other natural disasters combined. At a time when increasing our carbon sinks and protecting the environment plays a crucial role in our survival, plastic grass only works to increase Co2 emissions and harm human health.
We are already seeing it banned in cities and towns across Australia, including Belmont and Rockingham in South Australia, and in the City of Adelaide. A petition to the UK government got over 30,000 signatures, and the fight there is continuing, as well as elsewhere across Europe and the U.S.
This is an important window of opportunity for Victoria to be at the forefront of a global movement to ban fake plastic grass, and keep our cities safe and cool.
Come and meet with us, along with local decision makers and members of your community in Melbourne's inner-north, as we launch our campaign to get fake plastic grass banned in public spaces in Victoria, and pave the way for other states to follow suit.
