Why the governor's race matters more than most people realize.

The governor shapes decisions that reach into ordinary life in Maryland — what schools receive, how health care is delivered, what it costs to keep the lights on, how transportation and housing get built, who is appointed to boards and courts, and which bills become law and which are vetoed.

The governor also sits at the center of Maryland's relationship with the federal government. Billions in federal dollars flow to the state each year for health care, education, transportation, housing, and emergency response, and the governor's administration decides how to manage and distribute those resources. When federal policy or funding shifts, the governor determines how Maryland responds—what the state absorbs, what it replaces, and what it contests. For a state with as many federal workers and federal facilities as ours, that relationship is not abstract.

These are the powers we'll be asking about.

What we'll cover:

  • State budget priorities and how federal funds are managed
  • Education, health care, and the cost of living
  • Public safety and criminal justice
  • Jobs, wages, and Maryland's economy
  • How each candidate would approach the state's relationship with the federal government

A note on where we stand: WE CAN and our partners are nonpartisan 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(7) organizations. We do not support or oppose any candidate for public office. We host this forum because voters make better decisions with more information, and because this office affects daily life in Maryland more than almost any other on the ballot.

Free and open to the public.
