Suicide among teens has increased in recent years, but not enough attention is paid to the dramatic increase in suicide among Black teens. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide among Black youth ages 10 to 24 rose 36.6% from 2018 to 2021, the largest percentage jump among any demographic. We don’t know enough about how to prevent the tragic deaths of young people by suicide, and we invite you to learn with us as we screen a film about Jamal Clay, a Chicago youth lost to us in May 2020. Jamal’s mother Rafiah Maxie will join us for a heart-to-heart discussion after we screen the film.
