A Virtual Info Session on WHY the ICBM ACT -- INVESTING IN CURES BEFORE MISSILES -- is imperative

On May 17th, TAX DAY, join WOMEN AGAINST WAR as we mark the GLOBAL DAYS OF ACTION ON MILITARY SPENDING (GDAMS) by exploring the tradeoffs which proposed increased spending on nuclear weapons and their modernization represent.

Instead of making us more secure, nuclear weapons continue to endanger us, and their proposed modernization robs us of the resources needed to confront greater threats to our wellbeing, security, and futurity such as: pandemics, climate disruption, infrastructure collapse, cyber warfare, and economic inequality.

These speakers will outline the imperatives for moving the money away from nuclear proliferation and modernization towards an eventual full embrace of the principles underscoring the UN’s TREATY ON THE PROHIBITION OF NUCLEAR WARFARE.

As one step in that direction, we will highlight the bicameral ICBM Act -- Investing in Cures Before Missiles -- proposed by Senator Ed Markey (MA) and Representative Ro Khanna (California). This legislation calls for a halt to the further development of the Pentagon’s new "ground based strategic deterrent" (projected $93-$96 billion) ICBM system, and the redirection of those savings towards the development of a universal coronavirus vaccine and towards confronting other types of biothreats.
