Learning Thursdays Series:

Winning Justice through Diversity

Winning against all odds: the power and possibilities of LGBTQ+ organising

“If we desire a society without discrimination, then we must not discriminate against anyone in the process of building this society” - Bayard Rustin

Join us for Learning Thursdays, a free weekly online learning opportunity for Citizens UK leaders and member institutions.

As a Broad-Based Organisation, we are taking the opportunity of this moment to learn and unlearn how we understand power, privilege, history, race, gender, class, sexual orientation and the experiences of people with protected characteristics through and within community organising.

How do we truly become a Broad-Based Organisation that is inclusive and diverse? How do we understand and challenge oppression in our organising?

With stories from organising history and current Citizens UK leaders, we will learn lessons of courageous organising and discuss how your chapter could become more diverse in its leadership and membership.

In four weeks, we will cover these themes:

  • April 1st - Organising for Racial Justice

  • April 8th - Winning against the odds: the power and possibilities of LGBTQ+ organising

  • April 22nd - Disabled People Leading Change

  • May 6th - Women Leading Change

Winning against all odds: the power and possibilities of LGBTQ+ organising - 8th April

LGBTQ+ communities have been marginalised and oppressed, have always had odds stacked against them; and yet for decades they have organised back and won. Overcoming very particular challenges, the LGBTQ+ organisers and leaders have built relationships and taken action to access justice for themselves, and for others.

This training will look at some of the key moments and lessons we can take from this courageous organising. What can we learn from the struggle towards acceptance, inclusion, and equal rights? What role can our own organising play in the journey towards more inclusive and powerful organising practices?

Register by filling in your details and you will receive the Zoom link for the session. Please remember to tell us which Citizens chapter you are a member of, or your institution is thinking of joining.

We look forward to seeing you there!
