Boston (Allston) WOA! Virginia GOTV Letter Writing Extravaganza (and Apple Crisp)

Start: Saturday, October 12, 2019 1:00 PM

End: Saturday, October 12, 2019 3:00 PM

Some of the Candidates

This is our first opportunity to flip a state legislature and end Republican gerrymandering! Swing Left is going all in, and we need you to help turn Virginia BLUE this November.

10/12-13 is Swing Let’s weekend of action (WOA) to get out the vote in Virginia. Join us for some letter writing and apple crisp (vegan too) to help power us through!

Virginia was home of the blue wave. In 2017. Democrats won 15 seats in the House of Delegates, nearly flipping the chamber—and representing the most diverse freshman class ever in Virginia’s history! We just need two seats in the House and two seats in the Senate for a majority.

We need to protect the seats we gained last cycle, an flip just two seats in the House of Delegates and just two seats in the State Senate to have a majority.

Virginia has one of the most restrictive voter registration laws in the country, with strict voter ID and restrictions on early voting that disproportionately affect low-income and African-American communities. And Republicans have purged electoral rolls of hundreds of thousands of people, many eligible to vote.

How Do We Do It?

Swing Left and Vote Forward have launched a national campaign to get 150,000 letters to Democratic voters in Virginia in advance of the November 2019 election. We are will be writing letters to encourage young people, people of color and single women to remember to vote in the upcoming Virginia state legislative elections

Virginia’s very winnable! Join us for a house party, where we’ll write letters to Virginia voters, encouraging them to vote in the crucial state house election on 11/5/2019. This proven letter-writing tactic will help us get out the vote for this important election---right from our living rooms. And with some apple crisp.

What’s at Stake?

Fair maps, voting rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and setting the tone for 2020!

Virginia’s legislative and congressional districts were last drawn in 2010 by Republicans, and are racially gerrymandered, drawn to disenfranchise African-American voters.

On top of restrictive voter ID laws, early registration deadlines, and barriers to absentee voting, Virginia also imposes a ban on voting rights for people convicted of a felony which disproportionately impacts African-Americans of voting age.

And on top of that, last session, the GOP-controlled House of Delegates prevented state Democrats from voting to become the 38th and final state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

No doubt that a win in Virginia will build momentum for blue wins in 2020.
