American workers deserve a living wage, not poverty
A new report has revealed that 44% of full-time American workers don’t make enough money to cover their basic needs. There are more than 39 million workers in the United States -- in other words, 1 in 4 -- earning less than $17 an hour. Women and communities of color, especially Black and Hispanic workers, are the most impacted.
According to estimates from the MIT Living Wage Calculator, there is not a single county in the US where a full-time worker making the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour-- which comes out to just $15,080 a year -- can afford basic essentials.
After the California legislature passed a bill increasing the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 per hour, the fast food industry has seen consistent job gains in every month -- including 11,000 additional workers since the wage increase went into effect this past April.
Workers shouldn’t have to rely on the benevolence of company executives to be paid a living wage. Every worker in every state, in every industry, deserves to earn a living wage, including tipped workers.
Add your name to demand Congress put workers first and establish a living wage now.
