Basic Income & the Future of Work - Wed 15th July

BASIC INCOME & THE FUTURE OF WORK

Join our panel of experts as we discuss how Basic Income impacts the wider future of work debate.

Wednesday 15th July, 6.30-7.45pm (UK Time BST)

Even before COVID-19, developments in technology was rapidly changing the world of work. Automation, or the threat of it, has been changing people's work patterns and left a trail of uncertainty as many people ask: what will their jobs look like in the future? Faced with the prospect of less jobs available, many have called for the Universal Basic Income as one of the solutions to supporting people's incomes as we transition to a new economy. Since COVID19, we've seen a huge surge in interest for the idea of Basic Income, both as an immediate response to the crisis and potentially as a permenant change to our social security system.

So can Basic Income help society navigate through the ever changing world of work?

We'll be discussing this and more on Wednesday 15th July, 6.30-7.45pm (BST) with the following speakers:

Prof. Nick Pearce (Director of the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) and Professor of Public Policy at the University of Bath) Nick has extensive experience in research and government policy making having been the former Head of the No 10 Downing St. Policy Unit and Director of the think tank IPPR. Nick now leads a team of researchers in Bath who have provided some of the most cutting edge research on the economics of Universal Basic Income in the world.

Dr. Daniel Susskind (Economist and Author, Oxford University). Daniel is the author of A World Without Work (Jan 2020), described by the New York Times as "required reading for any potential presidential candidate thinking about the economy of the future". His research explores the impact of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, on work and society and when writing in the Financial Times, he recently called for a Universal Basic Income in response to the COVID19 crisis. He previously worked as a policy adviser to the UK government and is also the co-author the best selling book The Future of Professions. You can check out Daniel's TED Talk on the future of work too!

Anna Thomas (Co-Founder and Director of the Insitute for the Future of Work). Anna was Head of the Future of Work Commission before helping launch the Institute for the Future of Work, a think tank working to shape a future where can adapt and thrive through the 4th Industrial Revolution. The IFOW's research have highlighted the links between the threat of automation and voting patterns in the UK and Anna has called for more research on Universal Basic Income.

The format will be a conversation between our three speakers, hosted by Nick, with you getting a chance to ask the panelists questions in the Q&A.
