Biden Administration is seeking our input: how should they help protect young people online? Share your thoughts!
The Biden-Harris administration and the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration are requesting public comment for how to best protect young people online. They are looking to the public to understand what they should prioritize and deprioritize when attempting to address Big Tech and social media.
As a youth-led coalition, we believe kids and teens who have grown up on social media know how to make it work best for us – we know the harms and the benefits. There’s a lot at stake if we don’t weigh in: some want to ban young users from social media, or ban social media altogether. We know that’s not helpful or realistic, nor does it address the problems we face. It will not go away, so we need to improve social media for our generation and for the future by sharing our takes in this public request for feedback.
Choose/rank what you see as most important from the menu of priorities.
Education and resources - I use social media to find resources that help me learn about myself, my identity and the world around me. I’ve been able to find critical information that has improved my quality of life.
Community - I use social media to connect with other people with whom I share interests or similar backgrounds. I’ve formed invaluable and vital relationships on social media.
Support - I use social media to seek validation and emotional support from others who have shared real life experiences. I have been able to receive crucial emotional support from social media that has had a positive impact on my wellbeing.
