Since coming back into power, President Trump has sought to punish anyone he perceives as his enemy. He has attacked the press, universities, and even public servants. The administration’s latest major target has been Big Law firms and the legal profession.

Too many of these firms are caving to threats and intimidation tactics from the President. They are shaping the future of American democracy — not in the courtroom, but in cowardice. When legal elites bow down and lend their names and reputation to authoritarian actors, they’re not neutral. They’re complicit.

Nine firms have already pledged nearly a billion dollars in pro-bono work, and many of them have also agreed to dismantle DEI programs at their firms. Trump has repeatedly suggested that he expects the firms to serve his administration’s interests–and reports have emerged that the firms may be asked to represent Trump and his allies personally.

Fortunately, there are some Big Law firms fighting back, but the resistance is not widespread. These firms must stop bending the knee to Trump and fight back– our democracy is on the line.
