As we approach World Refugee Day on June 20, it’s time to take a hard look at our broken immigration system — and work to restore the U.S. role as a place of safe haven for people forced to flee.

Every year there is a “cap” on the number of refugees the United States will resettle. That means accepting more refugees from Venezuela or Afghanistan barred others seeking safety from violent conflicts, climate change, and political persecution — situations which U.S. foreign and domestic policy often exacerbates.

But with every new administration this cap seesaws up and down, driving chaos and instability. Xenophobes like Stephen Miller and Donald Trump hollowed out the U.S. immigration and refugee system by setting the cap at a historic low of just 15,000. President Biden has done better by raising the cap to 125,000 — and now, we can help ensure it doesn’t dip lower ever again.

Congress could stop presidents from treating refugees like political pawns by setting the floor at a minimum of 125,000 refugees each year. It’s time to remind the world we can be a welcoming and compassionate nation — and activists like us can lead the way!
