Congress must protect our democracy and vote down the ACE Act
House Republicans are trying to sell our federal elections to the highest bidder.
The recently introduced -- and woefully misnamed -- American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act includes a provision that erodes transparency by allowing wealthy individuals and corporations easier ways to hide their political donations -- remaining completely anonymous while they pour untraceable money into our elections.
During the 2022 midterm elections, $615 million of dark money from groups and shell corporations flooded the coffers of political action committees. This was a record for a midterm election, and only slightly less than the one set in the 2020 presidential election, where more than $1 billion in dark money was spent in contributions, ads, and mailers.
Mitt Romney may believe, as he claimed during his presidential bid, that “corporations are people,” but they’re also dark money groups, including foreign governments and investors with a vested interest in destabilizing American democracy. The recently introduced ACE Act would make that much worse.
We cannot allow dark money groups and foreign governments with nefarious intentions to have a say in our democracy. In the US, we believe in “one person, one vote.” It’s up to millions of everyday people to decide our country’s future, not multinational corporations, the ultra-wealthy, or a foreign adversary.
