Domestic Violence Advocate Core Competency Training (DVACT) Registration

About DVACT

The Domestic Violence Advocate Core Competency Training (DVACT) provides counselors and advocates with the opportunity to receive 40+ hours of training required as one of the three mandates under DC ST § 14-310 to obtain advocate privilege. DVACT covers topics including dynamics of domestic violence, trauma resulting from domestic violence, crisis intervention, personal safety, risk management, criminal and civil court processes, and resources available to victims as well as other competency areas and best practices. DVACT is not intended to provide individuals with the skills to start an anti-domestic violence organization; its purpose is to develop empowerment and advocacy skills for counselors and advocates.

FAQ's

How often is DVACT offered?

DCCADV offers the DVACT course twice a year, in the spring and fall/winter. There are not currently any other organizations offering the DVACT training in DC.

Is attendance required at all dates of the training?

In order to receive advocate privilege, you must attend each training day and module. If you do need to miss part of the training, you will be able to make up any missed modules at the following DVACT session. If you know you will have to miss a significant portion of the training, we recommend that you wait and attend an upcoming DVACT session that works better with your schedule.

Who needs to complete a registration form?

Each advocate (including individuals and staff from any organization) that attends DVACT needs to complete their own registration form. If you are registering multiple staff members, please complete this form for each person attending the training.

If you have any additional questions, or to request accommodations, please contact Leanne Brotsky at lbrotsky@dccadv.org or 202-299-1181.
