Expression of Interest – 2026 Newham Greens Council Candidates

Newham Greens are excited to open expressions of interest for candidates at the 2026 Local Elections, and we want you to put yourself forward. This form is open to both current members, and those who are not yet members.

This is for all 20 wards we do not already have candidates selected (i.e, Forest Gate South, Royal Victoria, Stratford, and Stratford Olympic Park). You can see a full map of Newham's wards here.

This form is an expression of interest. Submitting yourself now is not a commitment to standing in the elections, and there may be further requirements to meet for some wards – we will be in touch to discuss next steps. We don't expect you to know already which ward(s) you're interested in standing in, we're happy to discuss this with you.

It is important that Newham Greens represent the breadth of diverse identities resident in Newham, and also residents typically excluded from the political process. Those underrepresented in politics are often those most likely to imagine they are not suitable – we want you to know that politics is for everyone.

We encourage all members to put themselves forward, including members who are typically underrepresented in local politics, such as women, the global majority, LGBTIQA+ people, disabled people, and young people.

You do not need to have been previously involved with Newham Greens or a current party member to be considered as a candidate. We actively encourage any one interested in representing the Green Party or getting involved in Newham politics to put themselves forward.

Non-members are very welcome, but you must not be a member of any other party.

The Green Party is already Newham's second party.

We won more votes at the 2022 local elections than any party except Labour – winning a record 17% and over 4,000 more votes than the Conservatives. We also broke through onto Newham council, and we now have three hard working Green councillors delivering for residents every day.

We did this by standing local champions in every ward in Newham for the first time – this meant 66 Green candidates on the ballot across Newham 24 different wards.

This was an incredible achievement, and we need your help to build on this and do even better this May.

The Green Party is surging in London – we are now the most popular party, and are we're projected to elect a number of Green MPs at the next General Election, including in Stratford and Bow here in Newham. But this won't happen unless we get Green councillors elected next year, and we need to ensure as many people in Newham as possible have the opportunity to vote Green.

We're expecting to elect more councillors at the next local elections than ever before, and we are growing incredibly quickly. We have already selected ten fantastic target candidates across four wards, but we know we can elect more than that.

We expect to add more target wards heading into 2026 where we believe we can win. In wards we can win, we'll need great candidates in these wards ready to hit the ground running heading into the campaign, and prepared to serve as councillors if elected.

At the same time, we still need to focus our efforts on the campaigns most likely to elect Green councillors, so we'll need to select non-target candidates in other wards, giving people across Newham the opportunity to vote Green.

It's okay if you're not sure yet whether you'd be interested in standing as a target candidate or serving as a councillor – we're happy to be in touch to discuss this.
