North Carolina’s governor is so determined to discriminate against LGBTQ people that he is willing to risk $800 million in federal funding to his state. The Justice Department has determined that HB2 violates federal law, and threatened to pull funding unless North Carolina strikes down the law.

Governor Pat McCrory is doubling down and suing the federal government for the right to exclude LGBTQ Americans from public life as he sees fit. In a twist of remarkable irony, he says he will not be “bullied” out of bullying LGBTQ folks. The Justice Department responded with a countersuit of their own.

This is ridiculous. McCrory is willing to risk financial ruin for North Carolina and impede vital services like public education, all to take a stand for legalized discrimination.
