Join Hand in Hand: the Domestic Employers Network's New Jersey Chapter!

Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network (HIH) is excited to announce the creation of the New Jersey Hand in Hand Chapter! Hand in Hand the only national network in the U.S. of employers of nannies, house cleaners and home attendants grounded in the conviction that dignified and respectful working conditions in the home benefit workers and employers alike.

We all have a care story, whether you grew up with a domestic worker at home, or employ a nanny for your children, a housecleaner who keeps your house clean and organized, or a home attendant to support an elder parent or a person with disabilities. Together alongside the New Jersey Domestic Workers Coalition will fight for dignified working conditions, mobilize people in civic engagement work and stand in solidarity with communities of color to fight racial and economic oppression.

In New Jersey, the domestic worker industry is made up of mainly Black & Brown immigrant women. Due to economic conditions and the rising cost of living, more people live in tighter environments and during the pandemic low income communities were hardest hit with COVID-19.

By signing up and joining our movement, you're joining a national network that's celebrating ten years of big wins in the domestic worker industry. Some of our accomplishments to date are:

  • Working with the National Domestic Workers Alliance and other domestic worker organizations to pass Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in New York 2010, California 2013, Illinois 2017, Seattle 2018, Philadelphia 2019.
  • Launching, in 2014, My Home is Someone’s Workplace, a national public education initiative that has trained over 1,500 domestic employers across the country.
  • Organizing “Playdate Protests” with domestic employers and parents to fight family separation
  • Providing crucial resources to domestic employers during COVID-19 crisis.
