The post office is under attack. Service cuts and delays instituted by Postmaster General DeJoy are threatening the institution that has been a bedrock of our democracy. Saving the post office will require an investment in its future and an investment in postal banking.

Even expanding basic financial services offered by the post office, things like check cashing, low-fee ATMs, and sending remittances overseas, can bring in over a billion dollars in revenue for the post office in just one year.

This idea might sound radical but it's not even new. Most other countries, 139 in fact, offer postal banking. Half of black households have limited or no access to a bank. Most majority black census tracks don't even have a single bank branch. Banking at the post office could help black, brown, and rural communities save an average of $2,400 a year on predatory financial services to access their own money. We can make affordable banking available to millions of black, white, and brown communities now and save the post office for future generations.
