Labor History Tour of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is often remembered as the cradle of the American Labor Movement.Over the past 150 years, our region has seen courageous strikes and worker uprisings like the Battle of Homestead and the great rail strike of 1877. We’ve seen crushing defeats like the McKees Rocks Strike in 1909 and more than our fair share of inspiring victories. We’ve hosted foundational moments in our movement’s history including the founding of the AFL, the CIO and the AFL-CIO.
And Pittsburgh’s labor legacy isn’t just history. Today workers in Pittsburgh are organizing and mobilizing in dramatic and inspiring ways. Hospital workers, casino workers, adjunct professors, and fast food workers are organizing to win a voice at work. Steelworkers at the mammoth steelmaker US Steel are fighting for new labor agreements that will secure quality jobs for the next generation of workers. And workers all over the city are standing up to make paid sick time the law in our town.
Join Fight Back Pittsburgh at 1pm on Sunday, July 19 for a Labor History Tour of Pittsburgh. We’ll be guided by local historian and USW Retiree Howard Scott on a tour of Pittsburgh’s legacy of labor struggle.
We’ll meet at the United Steelworkers Headquarters at 60 Blvd. of the Allies in Downtown Pittsburgh and head out for a four-hour tour. All are welcome but please make sure to RSVP for the tour so we can arrange transportation for everyone!
