Make Survivor Safety a Budget Priority

When leaders say they support survivors, look at the budget.

We’ve looked at Mayor Bowser’s budget and we do not see the critical investments that are necessary to support survivors of domestic violence.

Budgets are more than mere numbers, they are value statements that communicate the  vision for the District. Almost 40% of women living in DC have experienced physical and sexual violence by an intimate partner, yet the recently proposed budget does not include any increased funding for domestic violence services. The Mayor’s proposed budget does not accurately reflect the ideals and dreams of DC residents; instead, it disregards the critical funding needs of domestic violence survivors and service providers.

We need your help to ensure that the DC Council creates a truly Fair FY 2020 budget that makes safety for survivors and prevention of domestic violence a fundamental commitment to the District.

We need a budget that:

  • Makes domestic violence specific housing a priority by expanding housing options for survivors fleeing violence.

  • Closes the gap between mainstream and culturally-specific domestic violence service providers to ensure survivors can choose services developed in and by their community to get them on a path towards healing.

  • Puts DC at the national forefront in ending dating violence by fully funding the School Safety Act and making critical investments in prevention education in DC schools.

You can tweet the Mayor and Council to let them know you believe survivors and that they deserve a Fair FY20 budget. It’s easy to take action, just click the links below:
