Two years ago, the MORE Act, a bill that would end federal marijuana prohibition, became the first of its kind to pass in a chamber of Congress. Yet the Senate, under then-Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, refused to take the bill up for a vote.  

Unfortunately, our current Congress has not yet brought the MORE Act to a vote in the House of Representatives.

As more and more states legalize cannabis, Congress must take up the bill and fully support these efforts.

Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer, and House Leadership,

I write today to urge you to vote on the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act to end federal marijuana prohibition and make essential improvements to how our country regulates cannabis.

This critical legislation would end the senseless and cruel policy of criminalization. Further, it would allow states to reform their laws as they see fit, expunge past cannabis convictions, and promote small businesses in this rapidly emerging legal marketplace.

The United States spends billions of dollars to enforce the failed status quo. We waste money, resources, and lives by continuing down this same path. In contrast, by removing federal marijuana restrictions and allowing states to legalize at the state level, the federal government could collect over $100 billion annually in tax revenue. That cash could go to innovation, social services, and other underfunded programs.

The bill has a history of success, having passed on a bipartisan 228-164 vote in the previous session of Congress.

At a time when a supermajority of Americans support legalization, now is the time to pass the MORE Act.
