In Ron DeSantis’ relentless crusade to silence Floridians and keep abortion rights off the ballot. His so-called "election police" are knocking on doors, interrogating residents about their signatures on abortion-rights petitions, and spreading fear throughout the state.

This is voter intimidation at its worst, an authoritarian playbook to stop citizens from participating in their democracy.

The reports are shocking. Officers are questioning people in their homes about petitions they signed, leaving voters shaken and fearful.

Florida’s election police are supposedly investigating “petition fraud,” but it’s clear this is a political strategy to undermine Amendment 4, which seeks to restore abortion rights in the state.

It’s a win/win for anti-abortion extremists, because even though they are tilting at windmills in their goal to find fraud, police knocking on voters doors is a blatant attempt to scare people into staying home on Election Day.

Florida voters deserve to know their rights are protected, and this type of authoritarian intimidation will not be tolerated. If we let this go unchecked, their plan might work. And even worse, it will send a dangerous message across the country that voter suppression tactics like these can go unpunished.

The Justice Department needs to intervene and protect our democratic process before it’s too late.
