Protest Piedmont Natural Gas Rate Hike Request - July 10, 2019

Piedmont Natural Gas - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duke Energy - is requesting a rate hike from the North Carolina Utilities Commission which will impact customers with increased prices and will fund the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in the region - at a time when Duke ought to be aggressively moving towards renewable energy. Effectively, this is a Duke rate hike request.

What are the problems here?! To name just a few:

  • this is the wrong time to be investing in any fossil fuel infrastructure (see, for example, http://ieefa.org/category/subject/atlantic-coast-pipeline/ ) - that goes triple for PNG's pending Liquified Natural Gas facility in Maxton (Robeson County, NC);
  • the Duke-PNG energy monopoly prioritizes the wrong approach - expanding natural gas instead of renewables;
  • Duke's money has corrupted the State's decision-makers;
  • etc.
The Utilities Commission will be holding 3 public hearings around the State during July on this matter. The dates for those hearings are: July 9 in High Point; July 10 in  Charlotte; and July 17 in Wilmington.

Join us in Charlotte on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 for a series of actions which will oppose the rate hike and counter Duke-PNG's vision of a gas-fueled future. Actions will include testimony before the Commission, a rally, and a press conference.
