Weeks ago, Britain shut down its last coal-fired power plant. Big news: we’re way behind with over 200 power plants still burning massive amounts of coal here in the U.S.

Extreme weather events like Hurricanes Milton and Helene are becoming more intense and more frequent due to fossil fuel pollution, and coal is the worst contributor. The closure of every coal-fired power plant means:

• Reduced local mortality rates

• An estimated local benefit of $1 to $4 billion in healthcare and loss of life savings

• Reduced Acid Rain

• Reduced Groundwater Pollution

• Reduced greenhouse gas emissions leading to less global warming

Coal companies have been allowed to mislead investors, regulators, and the public about the risks associated with their products. The leaders of these companies have failed in their moral and fiduciary responsibilities, and without external pressure, they will continue hurting our communities and destroying our planet.
