Sign the Hip Hop Democracy Reform Agenda

The Hip Hop community has every right to be frustrated with the democratic process. We can’t continue allowing elected officials to beg for our vote, just to make decisions that don’t speak to our needs. We know what’s best for our communities, especially when the current legislative process is outdated and doesn’t mirror the culture.

The Hip Hop Democracy Reform Agenda is a modern reflection of its true representation.

This Fall, dig deep with discussions on how streamlining voter rights for returning citizens and using automatic and same-day voter registration will bring broader voter access for all citizens. Encourage conversations around mobilizing our communities to ensure legislatures fulfill the promises they made to secure our vote.

I pledge to sign the Hip Hop Democracy Reform Agenda, have intentional discussion centering it, and share the Agenda with family and friends until liberation rings!

Democracy Reform Agenda

  1. End the Filibuster in the United States Senate. The current environment the United States Government as it currently forms does not fulfill its obligations to We the People.

  2. Enact Independent Nationwide Redistricting Reform. We need Democracy and Voting Rights Reforms that are modernized.

  3. Expand the membership of the United States House of Representatives so that every single seat has the same population and truly honor one person, one vote.

  4. Expand the United States Supreme Court to ensure it reflects the modern majority perspective.

  5. Statehood to DC, Puerto Rico, and give the U.S. Virgin Island, the American Samoa, Guam and the North Marianas Islands with the right to self determination. We know that diversity is our strength and our government must look like the nation it governs.

  6. Fulfill the obligations to the Indigenous Native populations as laid out in its many treaties to provide them delegates to represent their respective tribes in the U.S. Congress. We know our strength lies in representing all citizens, not a chosen few.

  7. Ratification of a constitutional amendment to end the Electoral College allowing for the peoples votes to elect our President and Vice President.

Voting Rights Agenda

  1. Ratification of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing every American citizen the Right to Vote. Every single power we the people have is provided at its simplest form as the right to vote.

  2. Make Election Day a Federal/State Holiday. Access and an increased voter turnout would ensure We the People are heard.

  3. Universal Automatic Voter Registration. Streamlining voter registration would drastically increase participation in the electoral process. This would also decrease the backlog for local offices.

  4. Universal Same Day Voter Registration. We know the current process creates inaccurate data even on election day. This would minimize voters being turned away from casting their vote.

  5. Universal Early Voting for 3 weeks including weekends before Election Day. This should be the case in every state. Minimizing access detracts from our right to participate.

  6. Universal No Excuse Absentee Ballot Access. This would help reduce wait times and allow voters an opportunity to vote that flexible to them.

  7. Full Restoration of Voting Rights to Returning Citizens. We know that enfranchising returning citizens and creating a process for voter registration immediately upon release would ensure the right to vote for all citizens.

  8. Enact legislation to make sure Incarcerated Americans are counted at their last address not the place of their incarceration in the decennial census. This would ensure We The People are represented and not excluded.

  9. Enact a 21st Century Voting Rights Act that reinstates pre-clearance for states with a history of voter suppression and overturn Shelby County v. Holder. Without question states should be held accountable for denying every citizen their right to vote.

  10. Consider Alternative methods of voting (rank choice, proportional voting, etc). We need to rebalance the nation back towards the people not the powerful!
