Sign the petition: Congress must regulate the airline industry

As we navigate through 2023, countless Americans are already grappling with the severe impact of intensifying climate-related storms. Stranded in crowded airports, they're missing cherished moments with family and friends, being subjected to escalating fares, and left in limbo as understaffed airlines, due to their own mismanagement, fail to effectively handle the resulting chaos.

The harsh reality is that these storms, supercharged by our rapidly worsening climate crisis, are becoming our new normal. The four biggest airlines—American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines—currently dominate over half of the U.S. market. Their unchecked control allows them to ignore the needs of the consumers and the planet.

Despite the $54 billion of taxpayer money injected into the financial reserves of airlines during the pandemic, we see airlines skimping on the very resources that make them run - their staff. They might call it 'streamlining' or 'optimizing', but let's call it what it is – a blatant failure to recognize the value of their own employees.

While airlines play the blame game, we must remember the underlying issue: a lack of effective industry regulation.

Congress has the power to enforce climate accountability and consumer protection in the airline industry. By implementing strict regulations, Congress can not only discourage airlines from overbooking flights and ensure improved service but also hold these corporations accountable for their role in exacerbating climate change.
