It’s time for the statue of Christopher Columbus in front of Minnesota's state capitol building to come down.

Christopher Columbus terrorized, enslaved, and murdered Black and Native communities. He doesn’t deserve celebration, recognition, or monuments in his honor.

Instead of completely getting rid of any monument, Governor Dayton and the Minnesota state legislature should replace Columbus with a statue honoring Black and Native communities in Minnesota.

There’s also another petition going to replace the statue with one of Prince and one chosen by the Native community. Whatever the Minnesota state legislature does, one thing is clear: this statue must come down.
