This has opened the floodgates for dark money to dominate our elections, with wealthy special interests using dark money organizations to secretly influence the political landscape.

Outside spending in federal races has hit record highs, with super PACs and other groups pouring nearly $318 million into the 2024 elections as of January 14—more than six times the amount spent at this point in the 2020 cycle, highlighting the critical need for reform driven by anonymous contributions.

The End Tax Breaks for Dark Money Act is a pivotal step towards restoring integrity in our political system by closing loopholes that have allowed billionaires to funnel vast sums into dark money organizations without paying taxes. This legislation, introduced by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.), targets the tax code's exemptions that have enabled the wealthiest individuals to exert significant influence over our democracy, all while avoiding up to $400 million in taxes on a single donation worth $1.6 billion.
