January 21, 2023 marks the 13th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United v. FEC decision, which gave corporations the free speech rights of individuals and opened the door to unlimited corporate spending to influence elections.

In the 13 years since Citizens United was decided:

• Election spending has exploded! An estimated $16.7 BILLION was spent on the 2022 midterm elections.

• The ultra wealthy hold enormously outsized power, transforming our democracy into more and more of an oligarchy each day.

• Super PACs have brazenly ignored campaign finance laws, and corporations are hiding their political spending–and even bribe politicians–in secretive entities.

• Foreign powers have exploited the loopholes Citizens United created to influence our elections from abroad.

We MUST overturn the dangerous Citizens United ruling and build a democracy where everyone plays by the same set of rules and everyone, no matter how wealthy, can make their voices heard.

Congress has the power to fix this. To end an era in which wealthy corporations have been given free rein to spend nearly unlimited money on political campaigns, Democrats in the U.S. House proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn Citizens United.
