In recent years, some corporations making personal hygiene products containing exfoliants have started using “microbeads”—plastic balls which do not easily break down, are small enough to slip past treatment processes, and end up floating in the ocean essentially forever, forming a sort of mush in the middle of the sea, killing life.

A study of the Hawaiian Islands showed that plastics accounted for 47% of shoreline debris.
