The financial devastation of COVID-19 to working people and small businesses has been earth-shattering. Massive layoffs have resulted in 36 million Americans filing for unemployment and could leave over 43 million could lose their health insurance.

Since the onset of Congressional COVID-19 relief packages, several programs have been installed in order to address these concerns. These programs, however, have either been repeatedly abused or have fallen extremely short.

Now, new legislation has been introduced in Congress to ensure those facing hardships as a result of the pandemic are protected.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduced the Paycheck Recovery Act, legislation that would guarantee the first $100,000 in annual wages for all workers during the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, the bill would keep workers in their jobs and connected to their health care and other benefits, prevent employers of all sizes from being forced to close permanently, and ensure that the economy is ready to restart when the COVID-19 pandemic ends.

In order to continue to preserve public health, many will need to remain at home. Without added and expansive federal action, these folks will not be able to pay their bills and could lose their benefits.

Congress must ensure workers devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic receive the protections and support needed during this challenging time.
