It's official — NPEU has endorsed two candidates in the District of Columbia in the June 2026 primary elections!

Janeese Lewis George is is running for DC Mayor. A third-generation Washingtonian, she is the current Councilmember for Ward 4, having served in that role since January 2021. In her over five years on the DC Council, Lewis George has emerged as the preeminent champion for progressive causes, fighting to protect the rights of workers and tenants against big money interests. Her “people-first” campaign pledges to do the same. On the campaign trail, she has vowed to stand up against the Trump regime and defend Home Rule, end MPD collaboration with ICE, make childcare free for all, expand social housing, and raise the minimum wage.

Aparna Raj is a tenant organizer, nonprofit worker, and union member currently running for the Ward 1 seat on the DC Council. Her ambitious, progressive policy proposals align her with the interests of our union, like raising the DC minimum wage to $25 and introducing a DC Right to Organize Act. She has also pledged to bolster constituent services, make childcare free in DC, and expand rent control.
