AFSCME members who work in corrections show up every day because we’re proud to protect the public. We walk the toughest beat, keeping our colleagues and our communities safe.
But some billionaires and anti-union extremists want to privatize our correctional facilities – putting profits over people, making us less safe, and taking away our union freedoms. They plan to line their pockets after a new executive order was signed that will unleash millions of dollars in federal contracts to private prisons and their CEOs.
This executive order won’t do anything to make our communities safe, fix the short-staffing crisis in corrections, or address our broken immigration system. But it will line the pockets of billionaires and private prison corporations at the expense of dedicated corrections officers and employees.
AFSCME members have fought against the private prison industry for decades and put a stop to these facilities in many states across America. When we get organized, we can ensure our work continues to serve the public instead of billionaires and corporate profits.
