Stand with the FM Union

Background

We, the eligible staff of the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), announced on Monday, September 3rd that an overwhelming supermajority of eligible staff signed cards to form a union and authorized the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) IFPTE Local 70 to be our representative. To our great disappointment, FMF leadership has declined to recognize our union voluntarily and instead immediately deferred to the National Labor Relations Board. We believed that with collective bargaining being at the forefront of our guiding principles (feminist.org/about/mission-principles), FMF would have enthusiastically agreed to voluntary recognition of our union. Furthermore, as an organization that has worked to advance the feminist movement, which is intrinsically tied to the labor movement, we were disappointed with FMF’s response. Therefore, we are calling on our network of former staff and interns, our Feminist Campus-affiliated Student Groups (a.k.a. FMLAs), and our allies within the feminist movement to sign a letter in support of our fight for a more democratic workplace.

FMF management’s decision not to recognize our union means that they plan to drag out the process by sending it on to the National Labor Relations Board, making us reconfirm our votes in spite of our established supermajority. Your support for the below letter will help us convince FMF’s leadership that it’s time to stop delaying the inevitable and recognize the FM Union. Thank you for your support! You can follow us on Twitter and Instagram @FM__Union.

To: Feminist Majority Foundation Management & Board of Directors,

We, the undersigned former Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) staff and interns, members and alumni of Feminist Campus-affiliated student groups, and leaders and workers in the feminist movement, call on the Feminist Majority Foundation’s leadership to recognize the union recently formed by a supermajority of FMF’s eligible employees. We believe in the organization’s mission and have each dedicated much of our own time to the feminist movement in order to fight for justice and equity. We believe that unionizing is inherent to a fight for a more just world under dominant systems of white supremacy, capitalism, and cisheteropatriarchy, and we urge you to voluntarily recognize the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union as the representative of FMF’s eligible employees.

FMF employees are choosing to unionize because they value intersectionality, transparency, accountability, inclusivity, justice, equity, cooperation, and respect, and their endeavor to ensure a more democratic and equitable workplace is completely in line with feminist ideals. Unionizing is a necessary step to ensure that these ideals continue to guide our movement, as there can be no trust in a workplace in which self-proclaimed feminist employers actively work against their employees.

Movements change, and we are discouraged and frustrated by resistance from nonprofit leaders at women’s and reproductive rights organizations as we have repeatedly expressed what needs to change in our own movement. At a time when racial justice has become a prominent part of public consciousness, it is our duty to further emphasize our commitments to anti-racism within our own organizations. It is clear that FMF must take actionable steps towards these commitments, especially as it has recently received criticism as an organization that upholds and perpetuates white feminism and has actively harmed numerous employees of color.

Through unionizing, we hope that current and future FMF employees will have an outlet to address workplace issues and help FMF remain focused on the importance of providing an equitable work environment for all of its workers. As the future of this movement, we know that the ongoing terror in our country will not end overnight--no matter the outcome of this year’s election--and implore FMF not to sideline its internal issues by sending its workers to the Trump-appointed NLRB rather than voluntarily recognizing FM Union.

Sincerely,
