Tell Governor Newsom: Time to step in to Stop Sable's dangerous oil pipeline

Tell Governor Newsom that his agencies must do the right thing: Stop the restart. Defend our precious ecosystems and prioritize people over Big Oil’s profits.

1. Governor Gavin Newsom
Phone: 916-445-2841
Hours: Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Pacific Time

Sample Call Script:

"Hello. My name is ___ and I’m a resident of ____. I’m very concerned about the Sable Pipeline that is nearing restart without ANY environmental impact review or opportunity for public comment.

This pipeline and the offshore drilling unit it’s connected to would add 2.5 million tons of CO2 to our atmosphere every year — essentially undoing Gov. Newsom’s climate legacy.

None of us want a repeat of the massive 2015 oil spill at Refugio State Beach.

Please stop the unacceptable fast-tracking of the Santa Ynez Unit. At a minimum, the state cannot legally allow this pipeline to restart without conducting a full environmental review with a public comment opportunity. Thank you."

Background on the issue:

Ten years ago, a ruptured oil pipeline spilled more than 450,000 gallons of crude oil into the Pacific Ocean at Refugio State Beach. Beaches were closed, fisheries shut down, and marine wildlife — from pelicans to sea lions — died in devastating numbers.

We should be learning from our past — not repeating it. But as we mark this grim anniversary, Sable Offshore Corp., the Texas-based oil company is running roughshod over California regulations, defying authorities, and even issuing false press releases claiming to have restarted production — all part of their cowboy antics in their blatant attempt to force the hands of California agencies to rush through their pipeline without environmental review and behind closed doors.

To make matters worse, after indicating to the public that they would conduct an environmental review, California State Parks instead recently granted Sable an exemption from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to continue work on their pipeline — again cruelly snatching away the opportunity for public input on environmental harms to come.

Even as a California Superior Court Judge found credible evidence that Sable violated the California Coastal Act when they conducted unpermitted work in the sensitive Gaviota Coast — and issued an injunction to stop them from causing more harm — Sable’s illegal work continues and Governor Newsom has failed to act with the urgency needed to protect the coast and climate. A company with a record of ignoring our laws and regulations should be held to the highest standards — not exempted from them.
