Support a South Dakota Statewide Mask Requirement

‘An Act to Temporarily Require the Wearing of Face Coverings in the State Under Certain Conditions and to Declare an Emergency’

To House Speaker Rep. Spencer Gosch, and Senate Majority Leader Sen. Gary Cammack:

South Dakota was well positioned from the outset to weather COVID as best we could, but the governor chose to flaunt our population and geographic advantages and promote zero personal responsibility. She also ignored health care providers, actively spread false information about masks, and modeled poor behavior with distancing and large gatherings. And even though our economy was going to be fine, thanks to our great local business owners and workers, it’s too late for those we’ve lost, and for those who unnecessarily got sick.

We needed - and still need - real statewide leadership on how to prevent this virus from spreading. That is why we are writing to express our strong support of A STATEWIDE TEMPORARY MASK REQUIREMENT IN SOUTH DAKOTA.

We believe that we must take immediate statewide action to mitigate this crisis through smart, low-impact, and effective community health and safety measures that will curb the spread and keep our Main Streets safe. A statewide temporary mask requirement in retail businesses and indoor public spaces where 6-foot social distancing is not achievable or cannot be maintained will do just that. We support it and you should too.

We're so close to the end of Covid, let's finish strong by taking reasonable precautions to ensure the least amount of damage during the closing months of the pandemic, by avoiding disruptions to businesses and schools, by keeping people healthy, and by avoiding further preventable deaths.

Respectfully,
