Tell Big Banks: Divest from Fossil Fuels!

The six biggest U.S. banks—Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley—just withdrew from the Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), an important global effort aimed at aligning the financial sector with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

2024 was the hottest year on record, and 2025 is starting with a bang, as wildfires erase communities in California. The climate crisis is here―and it is being made worse every day by irresponsible investments by big banks. We cannot afford to go backward!

With a new Presidential administration that believes the climate crisis is a hoax, we know our communities can’t count on politicians to protect our health and environment. Regulations can only do so much―we need to shut down the funding for new fossil fuel projects. Citigroup alone has spent $333 billion into the fossil fuel industry since 2016.

Tell the CEOs of these banks to stop caving to climate denying politicians, and divest from fossil fuels!

Our message to CEOs:

2024 was the hottest year on record. Climate-driven extreme weather events wiped towns like Asheville, North Carolina, off the map. Climate-driven drought meant that millions of Americans, from California, to New York, choked on wildfire smoke.

And yet, your bank is moving backward by abandoning the Net Zero Banking Alliance, a global network of banks set up to support global climate goals in 2021.

We know what will happen if big banks like yours continue on this path of retreating from climate action. We will see more wildfires forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes from coast to coast. Eventually, the home that’s on fire or under water belongs to someone you care about. And you have the power to prevent it.

People will die. Towns will be wiped off of the map by extreme flooding, wildfires, and hurricanes. People will suffer asthma attacks and heart attacks as they breathe wildfire smoke into their lungs.

Powerful people like you are choosing to walk back climate action and prioritize short-term profit over protecting all life on earth.

I urge you to do everything in your power to support a rapid and just energy transition away from the coal, oil, and gas that threatens all life on earth.
