The Los Angeles wildfires have been devastating, with lives lost, homes destroyed, and tens of thousands displaced. Recovery and relief will require swift and substantial federal support—but some members of Congress are already signaling their reluctance to help.

Despite the enormous human and economic toll, Republican lawmakers are proposing to delay disaster relief for up to two months. Even worse, some have suggested denying federal aid altogether, echoing Donald Trump’s baseless claims that California is to blame for these wildfires. This heartless and cruel inaction comes at a time when Californians need support the most.

Democrats never hesitate to provide disaster aid to red states. When hurricanes devastate Florida or tornadoes rip through Texas, Congress acts swiftly to ensure families and communities get the help they need. But time and again, when blue states like California face emergencies, Republicans use delay tactics, spread false narratives, and make excuses for inaction.

Congress must not let political gamesmanship stand in the way of disaster relief. The people of California deserve the same compassion and support as any other Americans facing a crisis. Federal assistance is critical to rebuilding homes, supporting displaced families, and ensuring that communities have the resources they need to recover.

We call on Congress to provide immediate disaster relief for the Los Angeles wildfires. Stop the delays, ignore the lies, and do what’s right for the people of California.
