Tell House Ways and Means: Send Trump tax documents to the Senate Finance Committee!

After years of Trump refusing to release his tax returns to the public, the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for six years of former President Donald Trump’s tax returns to be handed over to the House Ways and Means Committee.

The one problem? In less than a month, the House of Representatives will change hands and Republicans will be in control of the committee. There’s no telling how far they will go to cover up Trump’s self-interested financial dealings or his tax scams.

What’s hidden in those tax returns are in the interests of the American public and, possibly, national security. It’s widely believed that Trump had business dealings and took out loans from foreign countries that are hostile to the United States. We know that before he announced his 2016 run for President, Trump was very involved in building a Trump Tower in Moscow, Russia. It’s necessary to know if foreign operatives had any financial leverage on a sitting U.S. President.3

Thanks to blockbuster reporting from the New York Times, we know that Trump didn’t pay federal income taxes for 11 out of the 18 years examined by the Times -- and he only paid $750 in 2017. He has taken dubious tax deductions to fund his lavish lifestyle, and he received a $72.9 million tax refund that has been the subject of an IRS audit since 2011.2

Republicans have spent the last three years framing the fight over Trump’s tax returns as a political witch hunt by Democrats. There’s no reason to believe they will hold an unbiased investigation into the tax returns and hold Trump accountable. We need to keep the investigation going in the Senate where Democrats maintain committee control.
