Tell Judiciary Committee Democrats: Go to El Salvador. Demand Garcia’s Release
Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia was illegally deported in direct violation of a federal court order. Now he’s trapped in a Salvadoran prison designed for gang leaders and terrorists despite never being charged with a crime in either country.
And despite a unanimous Supreme Court ruling ordering his return, he’s still there.
The Trump administration’s defiance of that ruling is a threat to more than just Garcia’s freedom, it’s a threat to the foundation of our legal system. The executive branch has claimed that once a person is deported, even unlawfully, courts are powerless. That’s a lie and a dangerous one. If the Supreme Court can be ignored, then none of our rights are safe.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen took action. He flew to El Salvador, demanded Garcia’s release, and confronted both Salvadoran and U.S. officials. But he isn’t on the Senate Judiciary Committee. That committee has the oversight power, the jurisdiction, and the responsibility to act. They must follow Sen. Van Hollen’s lead, immediately.
There is precedent for congressional field hearings abroad. There is precedent for confronting international violations of American civil rights. There is no excuse for inaction. Judiciary Committee Democrats must travel to El Salvador, demand access to Garcia, hold hearings, and expose any deals or arrangements that are keeping him imprisoned.
Add your name to demand Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats take action: Go to El Salvador. Investigate this illegal detention. Enforce the court’s ruling. And bring Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia home.
