On December 27, 2024, Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital—the last major medical facility still functioning in northern Gaza—and detained Dr. Abu Safiya along with 240 other Palestinians. He continues to be held without charge or trial under Israel's Unlawful Combatants Law, which denies due process and enables indefinite detention.

Throughout the assault on Gaza, Dr. Abu Safiya refused to abandon his patients and remained at the hospital through relentless military assaults, including strikes that critically injured him and killed his son. He received direct calls on his phone from Israeli military officials threatening him and telling him to leave the hospital. He has been a first-hand source for Drop Site News and other media outlets, testifying to the dire conditions of Gaza's hospitals amid Israel's genocidal attacks.

Israel must release Dr. Abu Safiya and all unlawfully detained Palestinians immediately and without condition.

Dr. Abu Safiya has reportedly been subjected to physical abuse while in custody. A lawyer who visited him observed significant weight loss and conditions consistent with severe restrictions on food, medical care, and basic hygiene. His case reflects Israel's systematic targeting of Palestinian healthcare workers—hundreds of whom have been arbitrarily detained during the ongoing assault on Gaza.

Drop Site News is calling on the U.S. State Department to demand the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all Palestinians held without charge. Please sign our petition urging the U.S. government to hold Israel accountable and secure their safe return.
