Tell U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to endorse a global minimum tax on billionaire wealth ahead of the G20 summit
Untaxed billionaire wealth is a threat to democracy at home and abroad.
That’s why finance ministers from France, Brazil, and other G20 nations have begun talks on introducing a global minimum tax on billionaires, because they see how the massive accumulation of wealth among a very few is a threat to global democracy.
Wealth inequality is spiraling out of control. In 2023 alone, the world’s wealthiest families became $1.5 trillion richer.
Decades of falling tax rates on the richest has contributed to the rise in extreme inequality. For the first time in decades, extreme poverty is increasing, and nearly two billion people live in countries where inflation has outstripped wage growth.
Not only is taxing extreme wealth the morally right thing to do, but it’s also popular, even with the rich themselves. A recent poll of 2,385 people aged 18 and up, who live in G20 countries and have $1 million or more of investable assets found that:
-
75% support the introduction of a 2% wealth tax on billionaires
-
54% think that extreme wealth is a threat to democracy
-
72% agree that extremely wealthy individuals buy political influence
The demand for a global minimum tax on billionaires is there. We just need political leaders with the courage to implement it.
